The Ins and Outs of Car Park Ventilation Systems
When it comes to car park ventilation, regulations may vary depending on location and type of construction. Typically, there are two forms of ventilation methods that comply with building regulations: natural and mechanical ventilation. Natural, for the most part, means open spaces on each floor, allowing for increased air flow. Mechanical ventilation, on the other hand, is specifically used for underground car parks. These systems bring in fresh air while recirculating stale air. Overall, one or the other is always required.
For a ventilation system to function properly, it must meet all guidelines placed forth by the city. For a car park, these guidelines are obvious. In fact, they’re designed with the safety of each patron in mind. You’ll be happy to know, as someone who parks their car in a lot, that these systems adhere to all guidelines without fault.
Regarding regulations, smoke clearance and fume exhaust are taken into account. For smoke removal, sufficient openings are required. These openings allow smoke to exit the building naturally. If that’s not possible, a mechanical extraction system is used.
For exhaust fumes, a through draught is used to limit the amount of carbon in the air. These draughts are either natural or mechanical, like the rest of the ventilation system. Each one is carefully placed.
The ventilation system in a car park is designed very specifically. The geometry of the building is often considered. For a linear system, supply and exhaust points are spaced apart. For a mixed system, firmly placed supply and exhaust points are viable.
