Evaluate Your Roof for Potential DIY Repairs

DIY RepairsIn the world of home improvement, roof damage is the object of many DIY repairs. It is not always easy to get at the root of the problem inĀ roof repair. At Paradigm Roofing, we have a checklist of things to look for that might indicate your roof needs a little attention.

Inspect the Exterior

It is a good idea to walk around the outside of your home periodically and after a big storm to check the roof for damage. Here are some things that may indicate the need for some repairs:

  • Damaged flashing
  • Open seams or joints
  • Popped or rusted nails
  • Sagginess or sogginess
  • Clogged or damaged gutters

Other issues may include decayed siding, as well as missing, cracked, or curled shingles.

Check the Attic

While an obvious sign that a roof may require DIY repairs may be a leak, there are other things to look for as well. Paint may be blistering or peeling. Stains, mold, or mildew may mean trouble. Even dark spots are reason enough to look deeper to see if there is an issue.

When to Do-It-Yourself

Some home repairs can be very straightforward. With an assistant and good preparation, jobs such as replacing a valley or swapping out a damaged shingle or two can be relatively easy. For example, fixing a shingle or tile is a matter of waiting for it to cool, or cooling it with some water. You then pry it off, install a new piece, and apply a new seal.

Sometimes a leak is not a leak. Rust spots or soaked insulation may be a sign of poor ventilation rather than an actual leak. Depending on the location and complexity of the ventilation, this job could fall under DIY repairs, or it may require a professional. At Paradigm Roofing, we are here to help with roof repairs of any size. Contact us at (801) 485-4854.
