The Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation

The Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation

Although it has been around since the 1970’s, spray foam insulation is regaining popularity, and for good reason! Spray foam insulation can save you a considerable amount of money by keeping your home better insulated, as well as being overall safer than traditional fiberglass.

Because spray foam insulation is initially wet and expanding, it fills in any voids where applied. This means that the seal it creates is much more efficient than fiberglass rolls or other traditional insulation methods in which it is laid into position similar to a blanket. It can be installed into smaller or oddly shaped areas that would be too messy to fill with fiberglass. Spray foam insulation also has unique adhesive properties that can easily be applied to vertical or inverted surfaces. This efficient seal allows you to maintain cooler summer temperatures and warmer winter temperatures while running your air conditioning less often.

Attic Space

Spray foam insulation in the attic can lower the temperature in your attic space by an impressive 70 degrees! This also means that having ventilation in your roof is not necessary by having a lower temperature inside the attic space. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is designed to stop not only airflow, but water vapor flow as well. This prevents mold, mildew buildup, and prevents rot from setting into your support structures. If you already have fiberglass insulation installed in your home you will still be able to install spray foam insulation in the attic areas and around the joints of your house, resulting in cooler temperatures and money saved.

Saving Money

Despite spray foam insulation having a higher initial cost than fiberglass, homes make back the difference in three to five years through energy savings. According to the US Department of Energy, 40% of energy loss in homes is through air infiltration through walls, roofs, windows, and doors. The study also determined that structures with spray foam insulation typically had that amount of energy loss cut in half.
