5 Tips for Clean Gutters

As fall arrives, you will start having to do a bit of maintenance to ensure your home has clean gutters. Having clean gutters is paramount to keeping your roof in tip-top shape for the upcoming winter. If gutters are clogged during a rainstorm, the water cannot effectively leave your roof. Pools of water will cause extensive water damage that can cost a pretty penny to repair. Here are a few tips for keeping your gutters in pristine condition year-round!

1. Safety First

Before you go up to clean your gutters, grab a ladder and a friend. Having a second set of eyes and hands is always a good idea when using a ladder. Use the correct ladder for the job. Four legged stepladders or extension ladders that lean against the wall are recommended for gutter cleaning.

 2. Use a Scoop

Use a plastic scoop to begin cleaning your gutter. You want to avoid metal scoops, as they can scratch the inside of the gutter and create spots for rust. You can also purchase a scoop with an extension rod. Using the extension you can clean more of your gutter without having to relocate the ladder.

 3. Use a Hose

Use a hose with a normal spray nozzle attached. Spray towards the downspout to let heavier dirt and debris spray out. Afterwards, your gutters should be completely clear.

4. Don’t Forget the Downspouts

Spray a steady stream of water down the downspout to ensure any clogs are cleared. If you are having a difficult time clearing them, you should call a professional to help. Having clear downspouts is key to clean gutters.

 5. Keep Them Clean

Keep your gutters clean throughout the year with regular maintenance. Setting a date in the fall and spring is a good way to ensure you don’t neglect one of the most important parts of your roof!
